Very pleasant rooms and short walk to metro. However, it does not do you much good if you cannot get into your room.
I stayed here from September through January. During that time, the elevators broke 4 times. Each time, my card "need to be reprogrammed". That is something that a competent organization should be able to do instantly at the front desk. HowEVER, Shama is operated by cheapskates who pay apparently the minimum rate for outsourced elevator service. So, each time, my card was surrendered for a WEEK while it was fixed. Meanwhile, I chatted with other residents who experienced the same thing.
This is very annoying, as one walks over to the tower, discovers that it does not work, then one treks back to the main desk to find a person with a master card.
Since it happened every month, it indicates that Shama will not remedy the situation, which is pretty disturbing when one is paying about $4000 USD per month for an apartment.
I stayed at Shama Xujiahui for six months with my family. I have to say that I enjoyed it very much. The rooms were excellent; very well furnished and had two big flat screen TV's, surround sound system and two dvd-players. A big plus for the Japanese style toilet. The apartment was facing south with a nice balcony so the apartment was bright. The air-conditioning and heating (during the winter) was good however remember to say the staff that the housekeeping should not turn the heater off during winter otherwise it will be cold when you get there (especially from a long trip).
The service was excellent. The cleaning crew were friendly and efficient and we never had to wait long if we needed some service. The front desk was wonderful and we will miss them greatly.
The location was the best possible for us as my work place was far in the south (Minhang district). I think this was the Southern most place in downtown Shanghai where there is some change of getting service in English. It is easy to get around from Xujiahui; however it will take some time to get to Pudong so if you have to visit Pudong often, look for an apartment from that side of the river. The shopping possibilities are endless at Xujiahui. From Shama, it takes less than 10 minutes to walk to the subway (Lines 1 and 9) and to the four big shopping malls. Right next to Shama there are tens of different restaurants (Chinese, Korean, Thai, Western, etc. foods), a City Shop supermarket, Starbucks, Subway and other necessities for a Westerner.
To summarize, I highly recommend Shama for the convenient location, excellent rooms and great service. Only drawback is that the price is quite high but then again it is a serviced apartment. If you have to get something without seeing it first, I recommend Shama but if you have the chance to look around, go check the place out before renting it. I will miss Shama and Shanghai greatly.
