This hotel has a new manager/owner. It's now called Baiyi. That doesn't seem to make a difference so far. I've stayed here several times over the last few years, and the rooms are tired. They need a makeover top to bottom. (Do carpets ever get cleaned in China?) The low price is a plus compared to the few decent lodgings nearby. I just grit my teeth and count my blessings I spend very little time inside the rooms.
What this hotel has going for itself is that it's on right on Shiquan Jie, in the middle of the old town, with lots of shops, eateries, massage parlors, and bars along the street. The environment is relaxed, so it is a good place to wind down and take it easy for a few days. Centrally located in Suzhou in a moderately charming neighborhood. There are a couple of cozy coffee shops right across the street, and the post office, laundry, restaurants, banks, etc., are all within a few minutes walk. This is also close to the SIP business district, the major shopping malls, and many of the old temples and gardens. I really like staying in this area of Suzhou.
I'd recommend this place with advice not to expect too much from the rooms.
Stayed 3 days in this hotel and it wasn't a 4 star hotel that's for sure. The staff almost didn't spoke any English, but that's pretty common for Chinese Hotels outside Shanghai and probably also Beijing. The room was pretty big but very standard and minimalistic. The tile floor going into the bathroom was freezing and the carpet in the rest of the room was filled with stains (Why someone would choose a white carpet in a hotel room of this standard is beyond my understanding). The best thing about the hotel was the free Internet access and even though it was down from time to time it is true gold for a traveler like me to have an Internet access. The worst thing was the karaoke that went on every night until midnight and sometimes longer. It must have been in a bar next to the hotel, but it looked like there was a direct access from the hotel as well. It sounded like they stood in the bathroom, when you were lying in your bed. It was really really loud! The breakfast was horrible if you're not Chinese or into 100 % Chinese styled breakfast. There is a great place called Suca café just 100 metres from the hotel, and they have good breakfast and the best smoothie, so go there instead. Another great thing about the hotel was the service when we needed a cab back to Shanghai, even though their English was pretty poor, they really made an effort to help us out and told us what to do. I've stayed in My Hotel just next to this hotel a couple of months ago and it was cheaper and cleaner though it had no breakfast, restaurant or English speaking staff. I would rather stay there the next time.
